Rusted 3D Text

1. Create a New 1600x600 image with a White Background. Use the Text Tool to create some Vector text using these settings

Settings used:

  • Font Name = A font with some surface area to work with — I used Fusion
  • Size = 72
  • Width = 1
  • Create as = Vector
  • Stroke = Gradient | Gray
  • Fill = Pattern | Pastel blue splatters

For the Gray gradient, use these settings.

Settings used:

  • Angle = 0
  • Repeats = 0
  • Invert = Unchecked
  • Style = Linear

2. Hold Ctrl and place your cursor on the bottom-right corner of the bounding box. Drag the cursor right to deform the Text. Next, place your cursor over any corner, then hold down the right mouse button. Resize your Text so that it fits the width of the canvas.

3. Duplicate the current layer. Go to Effect | Image Effects | Offset... (Press OK if an Auto Action dialog pops up). Use these settings.

Settings used:

  • Horizontal offset = 0
  • Vertical offset = 1
  • Custom
  • Edge Mode = Transparent

In the History palette, highlight your last two commands (Offset and Duplicate). Press the "Save Quickscript" button found on the palette. Next, press the "Run quickscript" button. Each time you press the button, your text should rise. Keep pressing it until your satisfied with the height of the text.

4. Make the Vector Text above your Background layer active. Go to Layers | Arrange | Bring to Top. Press O to activate the Object Selection Tool, then move the Vector Text so that it lays on top of the stacked layers. Set the layer blend mode to Exclusion.

Duplicate the current layer. In the Layer palette, press the plus sign on the top most layer to expand it. Click the Text Object below the expanded layer to select it. Next, change your Foreground color to Black and Background color to Transparent (Null). Set the layer blend mode to Normal.

5. Hide the Background layer, then merge the visible layers. Duplicate the current layer. Go to Effects | Artistic Effects | Chrome... and use the Default settings. Set the layer blend mode to Hard Light.

Duplicate the current layer. Go to Effects | Edge Effects | Find All. Set the layer blend mode to Multiply.

6. Hide the Background layer, then merge the visible layers. Press Ctrl+A, Ctrl+F, then Ctrl+Shift+F to create a selection. Go to Selections | Modify | Expand... expand by 3. Press Ctrl+ H to Feather the selection by 3. Make the Background layer active, then create a New layer. Flood Fill the selection with Black.

Press Ctrl+D to Select None.

7. Hide the background layer, then merge the visible layers. Duplicate the merged layers. Make the middle layer active. Press Shift+B and set the Brightness to -255 and Contrast to 0. Set the current layer Opacity to 20.

Press M to activate the Move Tool, then move top layer up, until you are satisfied with the placement of the shadow.

That's it! You are now entering the 3rd dimension.
