Photo Weave

1. Open a portrait photo of your choice. Press S to activate the Selection Tool, then create a Rectangle selection around a facial feature (like an eye). Make sure Anti-alias is Unchecked.

After you've made your Selection, go to Selections | Load/Save Selection | Save Selection To Alpha Channel... press Save when the dialog appears.

Go to the History palette and press the "Empty Command History" button.

Note: It is important that you do the following step EXACTLY, without any extra commands or using Undo.

2. Press Ctrl+Shift+P to Promote Selection To Layer. In the Layer palette, change the Layer Link Toggle to 1.

Make the Background layer active. Go to Selections | Modify | Expand... Depending on the size of the image and how big you want the white borders, choose a value between 2-4. I'll leave the choice up to you.

Press S to activate the Selection Tool, then press the "Current selection" button found on the Tool Options palette.

Press Ctrl+Shift+P to Promote Selection To Layer. Next, press Shift+B and set the Brightness to 255 and Contrast to 0. In the Layer palette, change the Layer Link Toggle to 1.

Press Ctrl+D to Select None.

Go to Effects | 3D Effects | Drop Shadow... Use these settings.

Settings used:

  • Vertical = 1
  • Horizontal = 1
  • Opacity = 75
  • Blur = 3
  • Color = Black
  • Shadow on new layer = Unchecked

Make the Background layer active. Go to Selections | Load/Save Selection | Load Selection From Alpha Channel... press Load when the dialog comes up.

3. In the History palette, highlight all your commands, then press the "Save Quickscript" button found on the palette. Now all you have to do is drag the selection to another area using the right mouse button, then press the "Run Quickscript" button. Repeat the process until you are satisfied with the coverage and layout of the "frames".

Press Ctrl+D to Select None once you are done.

4. Make the Background layer active, then create a New layer. Press F to activate the Flood Fill Tool, then fill the layer with White.

5. Optional: If you want each frame have a different look, press M to activate the Move Tool. Now all you have to do is click each frame to make it active, then apply a filter effect of your choice.

That's it! Now you can create a Photo Weave.
