Pixel Button

1. Create a New 300x300 image with a White Background. Create a New Vector Layer, then create a New Layer Group. Set the Background color to Transparent (Null) and set the Forground color to Black. Select the Rectangle Tool and create a 75x20 rectangle on the Vector Layer. Make sure Create On Vector is checked. Anti-alias should be Unchecked. Width should be set to 1.

2. Press Ctrl+Shift+B to create a selection From Vector Object. Press S to activate the Selection Tool. In the Tool Options palette, press the "Current selection" button. Go to Selections | Modify | Contract... contract by 1.

a. Create a New layer. Go to Effects | 3D Effects | Cutout... use these settings.

Settings used:

  • Vertical = -1
  • Horizontal = -1
  • Opacity = 100
  • Blur = 0
  • Shadow Color = #c0c0ff
  • Fill interior with color = Unchecked

b. Create a New layer. Go to Cutout and use these settings.

Settings used:

  • Vertical = 1
  • Horizontal = 1
  • Shadow Color = White
  • Leave the other settings the same.

c. Contract the selection by 1. Create a New layer. Go to Cutout and use these settings.

Settings used:

  • Vertical = 1
  • Horizontal = 1
  • Shadow Color = #c0c0ff
  • Leave the other settings the same.

d. Create a New layer. Go to Cutout and use these settings.

Settings used:

  • Vertical = -1
  • Horizontal = -1
  • Shadow Color = White
  • Leave the other settings the same.

e. Contract the Selection by 1. Create a New layer. Go to Selections | Modify | Select Selection Borders... Use these settings.

Settings used:

  • Inside
  • Border width = 1
  • Anti-alias = Unchecked

Press F to activate the Flood Fill Tool, then fill the selection with Black.

3. Press S to activate the Selection Tool. In the Tool Options palette, press the "Current selection" button. Contract the selection by 1. Create a New layer. Flood Fill the selection with the following Gradient.

  • Gradient = Red-orange-yellow
  • Angel = 0
  • Repeats = 0
  • Invert = Checked
  • Style = Radial
  • Center Point = 0 for both Horizontal and Vertical

4. Go to Effects | Reflection Effects | Rotating Mirror... Press the "Reset to Default" button, then set the Rotation Angle to 180. Next, go to Effects | Distortion | Punch... Set the Strength to 50, then press OK. Press Ctrl+Y twice to repeat the effect.

a. Create a New layer. Go to Cutout and use these settings.

Settings used:

  • Vertical = -1
  • Horizontal = -1
  • Shadow Color = Black
  • Leave the other settings the same.

b. Create a New layer. Go to Cutout and use these settings.

Settings used:

  • Vertical = 1
  • Horizontal = 1
  • Shadow Color = White
  • Leave the other settings the same.

Press Ctrl+D to Select None. Merge Down the current layer (Layer | Merge | Merge Down). Change the current layer blend mode to Soft Light.

5. That's it! Use a pixel font like Silkscreen to add text. If you wish to change the color without affecting the border, all you would have to do is use the Move Tool to click on the colored button, then press Shift+L to Colorize. Set both the Hue and Saturation to 0 to desaturate the button. Then use Color Balance or Manual Color Correction to change the color.

To add more buttons, simply Duplicate the Group layer.

Now you can create a Pixel Button.
