1. Create a new image at 300x300 with a white background. Create a new layer. Press B to select the Paint Brush tool and load the "Instant City" preset. (Note: If you do not have the Instant City preset, download the zip and unzip the file to your Presets folder.) Or you can enter these settings in the Tool Options palette instead:

Settings used:

• Shape = Square
• Hardness = 100
• Step = 80
• Density = 100
• Thickness = 50
• Rotation = 0
• Opacity = 100
• Blend Mode = Normal
• Continuous = Unchecked
• Wet Paint Look = Unchecked

In the Brush Variance palette, enter these settings: (Press F11 to show the palette.)

• Color Blend = Direction | Jitter = 100
• Size = Normal | Jitter = 50
• Thickness = Normal | Jitter = 50
• Fade rate = 100
• Position jitter = 70
• Impressions per step = 1

Next, choose a background and foreground color, one light and one dark. I chose Gray and Navy Blue. Now paint the canvas in.

2. Go to Effects | Artistic Effects | Colored Edges... and enter these settings:

Settings used:

• Luminance = 31
• Blur = 2
• Color = Black
• Intensity = 12

3. Duplicate the current layer. Apply a negative by going to Adjust | Color Balance | Negative Image. Next Go to Effects | Image Effects | Offset... Enter these settings:

Settings used:

• Horizontal and Vertical offset = -1
• Custom
• Edge Mode = Transparent

Set the layer to Soft Light.

4. Create a new layer with a blend mode of Dodge and opacity of 40. Flood Fill the layer with the following gradient:

Settings used:

• Gradient = Black-white
• Angle = 315
• Repeat = 1
• Style = Linear
• Invert = Unchecked

5. Turn off the background layer and merge the remaining layers. Duplicate the merged layers. Next, go to Effects | Artistic Effects | Posterize... Posterize by 7. Now Gaussian Blur by 2. Finally, set the layer to Multiply and set the Opacity between 40-60.

That's it! Now you can create hi-tech metal panels.
